There has been a global evolution in the system integration space (not just related to translations) through 4 phases:

No integration between systems.

During this phase, humans were the “connector,” moving data manually between systems. This either occurred through copy and pasting or reading from one application and manually typing it into the next.

System-to-system integration.

Here, each customer funded integrations of many systems to many systems. This process was very slow and expensive to both build and maintain.

System integration tools/generic connectors.

This marked the birth of tools such as the IBM MQ Series. They added a lot of value, BUT since they were generic, they still required a lot of work (often hefty consulting bills) or highly paid internal experts.

Domain-specific connectors.

Each domain, like book-keeping/finance, marketing analytics, and now the translation domain, are being taken over by domain-specific connectors.
